Site interaction beyond the website

I can happily watch Vimeo videos such as the one illustrated below, within my feed reader, google reader

The great thing is, not only is can I watch the embedded flash movie, I also have the other site's interface within my reader, in that I can favourite the video. When I return to the vimeo site, my favourite has been added.

It’s lovely when a site considers the content it puts into its RSS feed. This is great work from Vimeo!

My Google Reader has subscriptions to a few design showcase sites, and the worst thing is when they don’t even put thumbnails of their content in the RSS feed. They clearly don’t take into consideration why people would use RSS for such sites, and if they don’t have thumbnails in there I’m not going to remain a subscriber.

Yeah, it seems that it’s not just newsfeeds, but embedded video content anywhere on the net - e.g. if I embedded that video on my blog

But you’re right, design for newsfeeds is a whole other area - another example of interaction beyond the site - there’s a whole other blog article on best practice for that.

Another view is: if you are creating a new webapp (as opposed to a web’site’) then you need to think carefully how your ‘thing’ can exist wherever it lives, and how these modules create one coherent (though not necessarily seamless) experience.
