Accessibility and SEO

A similar article to this one appeared on alistapart whilst I was writing this (isn't it always the way!) You don't have to believe me, but for what it's worth, here's my take on levelling the playing field of optimising websites for search engines.

Search Engine Optimisation, as an industry, is struggling to shake off an image of shysters and hucksters looking to make a fast buck by second guessing the search engines and perplexing users.

Accessibility, on the other hand, is something of a positive must-have at the moment, what with test cases having been brought against organisations that don't cater for all audiences contrary to legal statutes.

Counter-intuitively, the two areas have in essence converged, meaning that designing for the screen-reader and designing for search engines is essentially the same game.
